Water Damage Categories

Water is categorized by the level of contamination, and there are three categories:

  • Category 1 Water is considered clean.  This water does not pose a safety threat, but it still needs to removed quickly to avoid future contamination and damage to property.
  • Category 2 Water is “gray” which means it isn’t clean and should not be touched.
  • Category 3 Water is “black,” which is the most contaminated.  Black water areas should be cleaned by a professional water restoration company.  Examples include sewage and rising water.

Flood Restoration versus Water Damage Restoration

Flood restoration involves rising water from storms and will be considered Category 3 which poses a safety threat.  Not all water damages will have this category.  Leave flood restoration to professionals that know how to keep you and themselves safe during the water clean up process.
