Preventing Kitchen Fire: Tips for Your Fort Worth Home

Most residential fires begin in the kitchen. The safer your habits are in the kitchen, the more you reduce your risk of a house fire.

At SERVPRO of Fort Worth, we’ve seen our share of housefires and how the loss takes an emotional toll (especially when it could have been prevented). Though we are always available for Fort Worth fire damage restoration, we’d rather they didn’t happen in the first place.

We want to do our share toward preventing kitchen fires. In this guide, we’ll share how to be safe in the kitchen.

Kitchen Safety Checklist

An organized kitchen safety plan is a list of action items. Preventing kitchen fires is about maintaining everyday habits. How many of these do you already know about?

  • Have at least one fire extinguisher in the kitchen (especially around the stove and oven) and have it tested every six years.
  • When a pan fire happens, be careful not to discharge it directly at the pan as this will spread the grease which causes the fire to spread.
  • Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles such as oil spills, grease splatters, towels, paper, etc. Avoid wearing clothing that could catch fire (such as bathrobe sleeves that would drape over the stove).
  • Don’t cook with fats in a pan or pot that is too small.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep pets and children away from heating elements. Keep the pot handles turned inward so they are not bumped by accident or reached by tiny hands.
  • Keep the lid nearby so if a small grease fire starts in a pan, you can slide the lid over the pan to snuff out the fire. Never pour water on a grease fire.
  • If a fire starts in the microwave or toaster oven, unplug it and do not open the door. Wait for the flames to die from a lack of oxygen.
  • Have an escape plan and makes sure everyone in the house knows what to do when it’s time to evacuate.
  • If you can’t quickly get it under control, call 911 for help.

Having heightened awareness in the kitchen goes a long way toward preventing kitchen fires.
