June to November is hurricane season in the US. For Fort Worth property owners, there are several things you can do to prepare your property for a hurricane. Failing to get your home or commercial building adequately prepared for high-force winds, rain, and falling debris can seriously damage your property and cost thousands.

At SERVPRO North Richland Hills, we’ve been helping people clean up disasters and restore their buildings to clean, safe conditions. Give us a call today at (817) 589-1499 for a free estimate on our storm and Water Damage Restoration Services

Preparing for a Hurricane

Step #1: Stock Your Emergency Kit

If you haven’t yet, get your emergency kit stocked with the essentials. Include:

  • Drinking water
  • Flashlights
  • Non-perishable foods
  • First-aid supplies
  • Extra batteries/external battery pack
  • Phone chargers
  • A radio
  • Several days worth of medication for each family member

Step #2: Devise Your Emergency Plan

When a hurricane hits, where will everyone go? Who’s in charge of the pets? Make sure you devise a plan, so everyone in the family knows what to do, where to go, and when.

Step #3: Secure Important Documents

Collect and secure your important documents, such as:

  • Birth certificates
  • IDs and passports
  • Marriage licenses
  • Deeds
  • Insurance policies
  • Mortgage statements
  • Medical files

Also, consider gathering and securing family heirlooms and other valuables such as jewelry or antiques. Store everything in a safety deposit box or a fire and water-proof safe.

Be sure to include in your emergency plan the steps you’ll take to move your valuables and who’s job that is if a hurricane strikes.

Step #4: Check-in with the Emergency Management Agency

Know where to go if the area gets evacuated. The American Red Cross offers a free app you can download to keep informed and connected with your loved ones during a natural disaster. FEMA also has an app with information on free resources you can use if a hurricane hits Fort Worth.

Step #5: Secure Your Building

Hurricane-force winds can knock down gutters and blow loose items around your yard, damaging your house and even shattering windows and glass doors. So, remove loose furniture, ornaments, and other items from your yard and store them in a secure place.

Do a last-minute check of your gutters and remove debris that could become water-logged and tear away from the house during a storm.

We’re Ready 24/7 When Disaster Strikes.

Hurricanes move fast, and usually, you have between 24 to 36 hours to get ready before the storm makes landfall. That’s not the time to be heading to the store, securing your valuables, and devising your emergency plan. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and do it long before a hurricane starts forming.

At SERVPRO Fort Worth, we’re faster to any size disaster. Hurricanes can cause severe wind damage and flooding to your commercial building or home. We’re ready and available 24/7 to clean the mess, fix the damage, and restore your property to its former condition.
