Quick Tips for Storm Safety in DFW

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Stormy Skies in Neighborhood By following these tips, you'll be able to stay safe during any storm DFW throws your way.

Storms are a natural part of life, but they can also cause lots of damage to your home. You might be able to get through a hurricane or tornado safely, but that doesn't mean you're in the clear yet.

If you live in or near North Richland Hills, TX, SERVPRO is here to help you with any water damage restoration issues that may arise from a storm. We have been serving this community since 2006 and we're proud of our A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Here are some tips for staying safe during the next storm in DFW!

Tip #1: Find shelter

One of the most important things you can do during a storm is getting to safety. If you're at home, go to an interior room on the lowest level that doesn't have any windows - like your laundry room or small bathroom. If you're working or just don't have access to one of those rooms, head for an interior room on the first floor with no windows. Keep in mind that a second-story room is even safer if you have access to it.

If you're outside during a storm, stay away from trees and telephone poles, as the strong winds could cause them to fall over. Finally, remember that high water areas are dangerous - if you see water rising around you, move to higher ground immediately.

Tip #2: Turn off your power

It may seem like common sense, but you need to shut down all electronic devices before the storm hits if you want to avoid water damage. Even if it's sunny outside, leave your electronics unplugged until everything has dried out. That includes your lights, television, radio, computer, and whatever else you have in your home.

Any device that gets wet should be unplugged immediately. Generally speaking, if it's plugged into an outlet or connected to a power cord - leave it alone until you're absolutely sure the storm is over.

Tip #3: Move your car

If you have a garage, try to park your car inside. If that's not possible, move it as close to the house as you can during the storm. The last thing you want is for it to get damaged by debris or flooding!

Tip #4:  Use a disaster relief kit

In the event of a storm, you want to have everything you need right in front of you so it's easy to grab and go. SERVPRO recommends having a disaster relief kit filled with necessary supplies for your family. Remember that you can't replace sentimental items - but if they've been damaged, call SERVPRO anyway and we can help you work around that.

You should have a disaster relief kit that includes water and non-perishable foods, cash and credit cards, first aid supplies, blankets or sleeping bags, a flashlight and extra batteries, copies of important documents in a waterproof container, prescription medicine if needed, pet food and leashes or carriers for your animals, and copies of family contact information.

By following these tips, you'll be able to stay safe during any storm DFW throws your way.
